Ramblings of a much published New Zealand author

New Zealand Odyssey: Post Office, Jacksons, Trans-Alpine Highway, Westland

'New Zealand Odyssey', published in 1989 by Heinemann, was authored by me, Don Donovan (who did the text and illustrations) and Euan Sarginson, who did the photography and design. In this series of blog posts, I will publish some of my drawings.

In 1989 the New Zealand Post Office was a proud organization that offered its services in  the most remote parts of the country. This isolated post office was at Jacksons on the trans-alpine road from Westland to Canterbury (can you believe it?). I didn't actually see the door opened but presume that in addition to the red post box they offered stamps, parcel facilities, registered mail and perhaps banking facilities?

In the new millennium, NZ Post is no longer the old ubiquitous service. It's hard to find a post box, post offices are called post shops, and many are sited in awkward places, and more often than not, customers have to stand in queues while the counters have empty spaces.

They say email killed it off.
